As believers we are called to be the light in a dark world. We are called to give to the needy and care for those who are hurting, struggling and suffering. A just saw a video from a few years ago that was originally from 11 years ago posted on youtube but keeps being brought to the forefront because of the wisdom this man shares.

I have had very deep and spiritually insightful conversations with homeless people before thought that this video was too good not to share. It’s about 17 minutes long and you can see it below.

Here are a few scriptures that illustrate this:

Here’s a list of Bible verses in NASB that emphasize reaching out to the poor, suffering, and “the least of these”:

1. Matthew 25:40

“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’”

  • Highlights caring for the marginalized as serving Christ Himself.

2. Proverbs 19:17

“He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.”

  • Shows that helping the poor is honoring God.

3. Isaiah 58:6-7

“Is this not the fast which I choose: to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into the house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”

  • God desires active care for the oppressed, hungry, and homeless.

4. James 1:27

“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

  • Connecting faith with tangible acts of compassion toward those suffering.

5. Luke 4:18

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed.”

  • Jesus’ mission included prioritizing the poor and oppressed.

6. Matthew 5:3-4

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

  • God’s blessing and comfort go to those in humility and suffering.

7. Proverbs 14:31

“He who oppresses the poor insults his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.”

  • Showing mercy to the poor honors God.
